Resolution refers to the number of pixels or individual points of colour contained on a computer display monitor.
A pixel figure is calculated are by adding up the number of individual pixels on the horizontal axis and the number on the vertical axis. Eg. A resolution of '1280 by 1023' has 1280 pixels on the horizontal axis and 1023 on the vertical axis.
However, one of the challenges for designers and developers is that the sharpness of an image is depends on both resolution as well as the size of the screen or monitor. An image with the same pixels count will always appear crisper on smaller screens than larger ones.
