Domain

Just like you have a physical address for your home, a Domain is essentially the address for your website. Eg. www.bigleapdigital.com.

In a similar way that Google Maps needs a street address to provide directions, web browsers needs a domain to sent visitors to your website.

An organisation called ICANN is responsible for overseeing domains globally, identifying available domains for purchase.

If it wasn’t for domain names, users would be forced to enter the full IP address for each website to get access through the world wide web.

Whilst .com domains still make up almost 50% of all global website addresses, as available .com domains have dried up, a lot other other domains types like .org, .net and .io are growing in popularity.
